John 5:39-40
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life."
Reading the scripture is the very basic element of scripture retention but often a neglected means of retaining the Word of God. Studies show that we retain about 10-30% of what we hear or read. If we don’t read the scripture then we have no way of verifying the ability of the scripture to impact our life. Also, through the results of this statistic, we can see that reading alone offers us little opportunity to retain all that the scriptures reveal. Hopefully, we will go farther than simply reading, but that we will begin with the first aspect of scripture retention; read your Bible. (John 5:39-40) If you wish to develop a life of faith then this is the place to start. (Romans 10:17) I can remember time in my life that I asked God why He did not speak to us as He did the prophets of old. It was as if God placed His hands on my face and turned my head to a bedside table. There on the table lay the book that has been translated into more languages than any other; the Holy Bible. When my eyes landed on the big black book, God's revelation became so real, personal and piercing. He told me, "I have given you my Word! The prophets only had, at best, five of these books. They searched them diligently. You have sixty-six. If you don't pick it up and read it then I have no more to say. All I have to say to you is revealed there!" I had nothing more to say, but I did now have something to do. I could get to know my God through the precious gift given to us by the patriarchs of old. We can begin to increase our faith and our relationship with our creator and understand His principles of life by reading the only book that has transcended age and withstood constant scrutiny and criticism. Begin by developing a personal time of daily reading the most popular book in the world, the Holy Bible.
